SesameSeed and Vote Buying Discussion

Hello, I am an ICONist from Korea here.
Before start, I have to say English is not my mother tongue and still it is difficult for me to write down in English. But I know only English posts are recognized by ICONists and not many read postings written in Korean, no influence at all.

I remember the BLOCKMOVE vote buying incident that happened about one year ago. To my eyes, it seemed like a business deal with partners but Min Kim and many his followers insisted that it is a vote buying action and it is ILLEGAL that should be banned. After his tweet, blockmove dropped like a hell and never came back.

And last week, from Korean Kakao ICON community, I saw a message saying that a new P-Rep “SesameSeed” is suggesting a token called “SEED” for the ICONists who voted for SesameSeed team. And I checked with SesameSeed’s announcements and all, and figured that this is like the definition of “VOTE BUYING”.

Why Min Kim is not blaming SesameSeed as an illegal player? Because the market situation has changed? From what I know, another P-Rep STAYGE, WEBLOC, and VELIC also have their own tokens. Is it OK for other teams also giving out rewards for getting more votes? SesameSeed is about DeFi project, so that’s ok because ICON needs Defi project? What is the ground rule here? Illegal Vote buying is OKEY when one P-Rep is necessary for ICON? Min Kim strictly said vote buying is illegal and now I do not see any comments about this issue from him.

I am requesting Min Kim and ICON team and all ICONists to call SesameSeed’s action as VOTE BUYING just like they did one year ago. If else, All ICONists who do not vote for SesameSeed are stupid idiots who are losing opportunity obtaining more profits out of their action. If the story goes like this, oh please stop saying this network is decentralized and based on democracy. Only the projects and P-Reps Min Kim and ICON team say ok will survive, this is monarchy led by Min Kim.

ICON team and Min Kim has been the police of ICON network so far. I expect them not to say this is on the hands of community - they said the opposite when the same situation happened one year ago. IF Min Kim and ICON team say this is on the hands of the community, all P-Reps should suggest rewards for getting more votes, and all ICONists would require P-Reps to give something for their votes.

Maybe some expressions are rough and offensive, but I believe ALL ICONists would understand how serious this issue is. I have been believing in ICON but now my faith is shaking so badly. I hope all ICONists stand by my side and have the same oppinion as the problem here is super obvious.

Anyway, I don’t see how this revenue sharing is any different from what Blockheads have done or UBIK originally proposed in the pre-decentralization campaign, was criticized for and then rather decided to drop it.

작년 10월 네트워크 탈중앙화 이후, 커뮤니티는 생태계 성장에 집중하였으며, DPoC의 비전을 확립하기 위해 노력했습니다. 이를 위해, 재단은 네트워크 초기에 커뮤니티가 P-Rep 팀의 기여도에 집중할 수 있도록 커뮤니케이션 해왔습니다. 네트워크 초기에 Reward Sharing 위주의 P-Rep들이 자리 잡는 것은 네트워크의 미래에 좋지 않기 때문에, 커뮤니티와 지속적으로 논의를 거쳐왔으며, 이러한 노력의 결과로 ICON Community에는 안정적으로 블록을 생성하고 거버넌스 참여가 활발한 대표자들이 자리잡게 되었습니다.

안녕하세요, 답변 감사합니다. 물론 한국어가 편하긴 하지만 해외 아이코니스트들도 볼수 있게 영어로 답변 달아주셨으면 했는데 좀 아쉽네요. 솔직히 답변 내용이 너무 어이가 없어서 조목 조목 반박 해보려고 합니다.

제가 아이콘이 별도의 협의나 파트너쉽을 통해 Vote Buying을 장려한다고 했습니까? 별도의 협의와 파트너쉽이 없으면 아이콘 재단측은 아무런 책임이 없다는 식으로 들리는데, 기존에 블록헤드에게 제한을 걸고 "illegal"이라는 강한 표현까지 쓰면서 비난한 민킴이나 아이콘 재단측이 이번 Vote Buying 행위도 동일하게 비난하고 제한을 걸어야죠. 재단과는 상관없는 네트워크 참여자의 책임이다 라는 식이면 과거에는 왜 공개적으로 비난하고 제한을 했던거죠? 그럼 앞으로 Vote Buying을 걸고 표를 모으는 피렙이 나타나도 같은 입장을 고수할 건가요? 책임이라는건 선택적으로 지는게 아닙니다. 이런 원론적인 이야기를 하고 있자니 오히려 제가 자괴감이 드는군요.
그리고 이건 "얼마나 이익을 얻느냐"의 문제가 아니라, "리워드를 제시함으로써 투표를 득하지 않는다"는 원칙의 문제입니다. "실질적인 이익"이라고요? 실제 이익이 있으면 Vote Buying 안되고 이익이 없으면 Vote Buying해도 된다는 말인가요? 세상에 이런 코에 걸면 코걸이 귀에 걸면 귀걸이 같은 소리가 어디있습니까?
그리고 실질적인 이익이 없다는 말도 절대 동의 못하겠는데요. 실질적 이득이 없는데 왜 SesameSeed팀은 Vote Buying을 해서라도 피렙 순위를 올리려고 하죠? 너무나 당연히 "실질적인 이익"이 있기 때문에 하는 행위잖아요. 현재 실질적 가치따위는 없는 SEED라는 토큰을 미래의 가치를 담보로 신나게 뿌리고 보트 바잉을 해서 표를 엄청나게 끌어서 메인 피렙으로 진입할 경우, 얻게되는 ICX의 양이 "실질적인 이익"이 없는 수준이라고요? 그럼 모든 피렙들이 다같이 한번 Vote Buying 해볼까요? Vote Buying으로 리워드 꺼리 만들어서 뿌리든 눈물의 똥꼬쑈를 하든, Vote Buying을 통해 메인 피렙으로 올라서면, 피렙 보상이라는 상당한 수준의 보상이 존재하고 있습니다. 이게 너무나 "실질적인 이익"이 되기 때문에 SesameSeed팀이 SEED라는 토큰을 뿌려서라도 투표를 얻으려고 하는건데요. 설계상 이익이 없는데 니가 모르는거다 라는 식의 건방진 태도는 차처하고라도, 본인이 하는 말이 얼마나 어이없는 소리인지는 본인이 더 잘 알고 있을거라고 생각합니다.
Reward Sharing을 통한 투표를 얻는 행위 자체가 네트워크 성장을 저해하는 요소이기 때문에 illegal 이라는 표현까지 써가면서 막은거 아니었어요? 애초에 논점과 아무런 상관도 없는 커뮤니티 발전에 대한 이야기를 장황하게 적어 놓으셨는데, 그동안 열심히 해왔는데 이정도는 좀 봐줘 뭐 이런 이야기인가요? 제가 재단과 피렙의 기여를 부정하는 것이 아니라 공정한 원칙을 가지고 운영을 해왔는데 왜 SesameSeed 팀은 예외로 남들보다 쉽게 피렙 투표를 끌어올수 있는 수단을 인정해주냐는 말입니다.
원천적인 인센티브를 제거한다고 하지만, 메인 피렙 안에 들어갈수만 있으면 위에 설명한바와 같이 노드 운영을 위한 비용을 제외하고도 상당한 수익이 남습니다. SesameSeed팀이 몇명으로 이루어진 팀인지는 모르겠지만 팀 운영비로 상당부분 충당할수 있을 정도의 규모 아니었나요? 메인 피렙이 받는 노드 보상 ICX 규모가 얼마나 되는지는 컨트랙트 까보면 다 나오는데 무슨 인센티브가 없다는 소리를 하고 있는건지 모르겠네요. 그리고 이 논의의 쟁점은 Vote Buying 행위가 정당화 될수 있는가의 문제인데, 이걸 왜 경제적 인센티브와 실질적 이익의 문제로 치환하려 애쓰시는지를 모르겠네요. “득표를 많이 할 수록 예치해야 하는 ICX의 양이 늘어나기 때문에 실질적으로 득표에 대한 인센티브가 제거 될 수 있습니다.” 라니 이게 무슨 말같지도 않은 소리죠… 이 논리대로라면 지금 피렙들은 어떻게든 득표를 낮추고 피렙 순위를 낮추기 위해 똥꼬쑈라도 하고 있어야 한다는 말인데, 본인이 말하고도 어이없는 소리 아닙니까?
IISS 3.1 부분에서도 델리게이션 해야만 보상을 받을수 있기 때문에 인센티브가 없다는 식으로 말씀 하시는데, 이 논리가 성립하려면 SesameSeed 팀이 Vote Buying을 위해 투표자들에게 ICX를 나눠준다는 전제가 있어야 성립하는 논리입니다. 그런데 이 팀이 지금 ICX를 나눠줍니까? SEED라는 자체 토큰을 나눠주고 있잖아요. 조금도 손해보는것 없이 ICX를 보상으로 챙길수 있다고요. 누가봐도 인센티브가 넘쳐나는데 인센티브가 제거 된다니, 그냥 쉽게 생각해보세요. 그럼 대체 SesameSeed 팀은 왜 피렙에 지원했습니까? 왜 투표를 받으려고 SEED를 뿌리는데요? 토큰 이코노미라는게 철저하게 인센티브와 개개인의 이해관계를 기반으로 네트워크 전체의 성장을 이끌어내는건데, 인센티브가 없는 짓을 하고 있다는 거에요? SesameSeed 팀은 머리에 총맞았습니까?
이것도 논점과 아~~~~무런 상관이 없는 이야기네요. CGP를 주든 CPS를 주든 아니면 그냥 엑셀러레이팅을 하든 말든 그건 아무런 문제가 없는 사안이에요. 아이콘 네트워크의 생태계를 넓혀가기 위해서 Defi 프로젝트를 육성하고 지원하는건 좋은 선택이죠. 그런데 왜 Vote Buying 행위를 눈감아 주냐고요. 별도의 논의가 있든 없든 아무도 관심 없다니까요? 50+개를 지원하든 500+개를 지원하든 상관없다고요. P-Rep 투표를 받는데 리워드를 제공하고 표를 사는 행위를 막으라고 지적했더니 우리는 수많은 프로젝트를 지원해왔습니다, 이렇게 대답하면 듣는 사람이 어이없지 않겠어요? 아니 차라리 DeFi 팍팍 밀어주고 싶어서 특혜를 줘볼까 합니다, 이렇게 말했으면 심정적으로 이해라도 가죠. 아무 상관없는 소리를 이렇게 길게 쓰시니 제 답변도 이렇게 짜증 섞이고 길어지는 겁니다.
탈중앙화된 퍼블릭 블록체인이라고 하지만 민킴이라는 리더와 아이콘 재단이라는 당근을 쥐고 흔드는 소수의 주체에 의해서 의사 결정이 이뤄지는 Dpos 형태의 프로토콜이 갖는 근본적인 문제에 대해 지적을 한 겁니다. 진심으로 민주적이고 탈중앙화된 네트워크를 이루고자 한다면 개발사인 재단측에서 누구보다도 공정하고 일관된 기준을 제시해야죠. 그냥 그때 그때 원칙없이, 우리가 볼땐 이게 필요한데 니들이 잘 몰라서 그러는거다, 그러니 우리가 일단 밀고 가겠다는 사고방식은 중앙화된 회사 만들어서 해야하는 사고방식이죠… 탈중앙화되고 민주적인 프로토콜을 표방하면서 지금은 우리의 생각이 옳으니 일단 "컨트롤 가능한 다수결"을 통해 적용하고 반대하는 의견이나 입장은 Enemy로 받아들이는 방식이 어디에서 일어나는 방식인지 아십니까? 바로 위에있는 North Korea에서 철저하게 동일한 논리로 사회 운영을 진행하고 있습니다. 거기도 민주주의에요. 다만 다수결에서 동의하지 않으면 총살해버릴 뿐이지.

진심으로 어처구니 없을만큼 실망스러운 답변에 오히려 감사합니다. 제가 볼때 저는 독재를 기반으로 움직이는 다수결 민주주의 방식은 맞지 않는거 같아서 그냥 아이콘 네트워크를 떠나는게 맞는거 같네요. 지난 2년간 주변에 열심히 아이콘 전파하고 최고의 근본 프로젝트라고 홍보하고 다닌 스스로가 너무나 부끄러워지는 순간입니다. 제가 영어를 좀더 잘했다면 이 글을 영어로 적고 어떻게든 해외 ICONist 들과 논의를 해봤을텐데, 언어 장벽에 의지도 꺾이고 Bongan님 답변에는 희망도 꺾이고 필요에 따라 침묵하는 민킴을 보면서 더이상 논리로 따질 마음도 꺾였습니다. ICX를 팔아 치우든지 저도 SesameSeed 팀에 투표해야겠어요. SesameSeed 에 투표하지 않으면 멍청한 놈이라고 지금 인증해주신거랑 다를바가 없거든요.

설득력이 부족합니다.
다른 p-rep들이 수긍 했는지 궁금합니다. Seseamseed팀에 표가 몰릴텐데 열심히 하는 다른 p-rep들에게 피해가 가지 않을까요?
Seseamseed같은 팀이 계속 나오면 어떻게 하실건지요

seed팀에게 투표를 한 사람만 seed보상을 받게 됩니다. 알고 있는 자들은 모두 seed팀에게 투표할 것입니다. 이것을 용납하는 것은 말이 안됩니다.
이것은 탈중앙화와는 상당히 거리가 있습니다.

방법이 잘못 됐다고 봅니다

The author wrote in English to share this issue with other p reps, who speak in English.
Answering in Korean can be interpreted that you dont want p reps hear the official answer from Icon foundation. Also that implies you dont respect the author’s intension to share issue with English speaking Iconists and p reps.

The author pointed out it is not fair to let the certain p rep, which is Sesameseed, buy its voting power by sharing its token(Seed). Your answer, the gap of the reward by vote is not severe, does not address whether buying vote is fair or not. Your answer sounds like it is ok to steal a silver bar since it is less worth than a gold bar.

Plz confirm that you are anouncing the official response from Icon foundation.

먼저, 실망감을 느끼셨다는 부분에 대해 죄송하다는 말씀을 드립니다. 전체적으로 말씀하시려는 논점을 파악했으며, 말씀해주신 부분에 대해 내부에서 다시 논의를 거친 후에 답변을 드리도록 하겠습니다.

다만, ICON 재단은 진정한 탈중앙화 네트워크를 추구합니다. 재단이 커뮤니티와 논의 없이 단독적으로 밀고 나갈 의도도 없을 뿐더러, 퍼블릭 블록체인의 특성상 그렇게 할 수 있는 방법도 존재하지 않습니다. ICON Network는 커뮤니티로 이루어진 공간이기 때문에 커뮤니티와 소통 및 협력 없이 존재할 수 없습니다. 여러 방면에서 커뮤니티와 대화하고, 상호 이해 및 협력을 통해 논의를 이어가도록 하겠습니다.

말씀해주신 바대로 아직까지 만들어 가야할 것들이 많고, 부족한 점들도 존재합니다. 위의 사안과 별개로 2021년에는 AMA 혹은 재단과 소통할 수 있는 방법을 마련하여, 소통하고 협력할 방법들을 강구해보도록 하겠습니다.

SesameSeed 팀은 Vote Buying으로 순식간에 피렙 순위 24위로 올라왔네요. 꼴랑 $150 수준의 리워드로도 이꼴입니다. 보상액 조금만 더 높이면 아이콘 재단따위는 금방 제치고 1위 가겠는데요? 팀 순위를 높이려고 애쓰고 노력한 P-Rep들 그냥 다 바보되는 순간이네요. 트랜잭션 0, 네트워크 기여 0인데 순식간에 24위로 치고 올라가는걸 보세요. 이게 애초에 민킴이 Vote Buying이 Illegal이다! 라고까지 하면서 막았던 이유 아니에요??

막말로 재단에서 밀어주고 싶은 프로젝트였다면 아이콘 버리고 떠났던 마커스가 운영하는 하이퍼커넥트처럼 마중물로 한 200만개씩 투표 박아주던가요… 그것도 냉정히 따지면 재단이 강력한 보팅 파워로 원하는 팀은 메인 피렙으로 꼽아줄수 있다는 증거라서 매우 잘못된 행위라고 판단했었는데 말이죠.

이게 지금 얼마나 심각한 문제인지 재단이 인지 못하고 그냥 넘어간다면 제가 감히 예측하건데 아이콘은 끝입니다. 그냥 이오스꼴 나는거에요. 아니 이오스는 뭐 룰이 공정하기라도 했죠. 그게 돈놓고 돈먹기라서 결국은 망했던거지.

이제 Vote Buying 금지하고 SEED 토큰 보상으로 뿌리는거 막아보세요. 얼마나 광속으로 순위가 떨어지는지 한번 봅시다.

I remember you said there is no partnership but Sesameseed says ICON granted their vote buying action and there is a partnership. What the hell? ICONPLUS team seems to be CONFUSED WITH CAUSE AND REALITY. People who voted for Sesameseed did not onboard with the idea, but they want to get bonus for their votes. This is not a vote buying? For real? Are you freaking kidding me? Bogan even said there is no partnership but there is. ICON knew this is a vote buying but they ignored the fact cuz Sesameseed is a DeFiproject ICON wanted. Do you people still think this is a fair and democracy blockchain project? I don’t.

It’s plain and simple.

Min Kim has said this in the past.

We’re against ‘Vote Buying’, as defined by offering economic incentives limited to an entity’s own voters or to a subset of an entity’s own voters. Reward sharing’ offered by P-Reps is a blatant manipulation of IISS by providing economic incentives limited to their own voters, which is literally ‘vote buying’ and is a corrupt election practice. P-Reps that offer ‘reward sharing’ are jeopardizing the network.

SesameSeed said the following in their announcement post.

If this grant proposal is accepted by the ICON community, Sesameseed could possibly launch a SEED node on ICON within a few weeks. The stake requested in the proposal would result in great exposure and significantly less community stake would be required to establish Sesameseed as a major validator on ICON. The ICX votes from the community’s contribution will be rewarded with SEED, and begin to support SEED’s redeem value with the addition of ICX. ICX support will be added to Sprout, and ICON would become a part of the SEED rewards economy. At that point,Sprout users will have an additional option when swapping SEED between blockchains, which further strengthens the utility of the SEED Bridge.

If SesameSeed is rewarding its own voters, and not ALL voters, with SEED tokens (a clear economic incentive), then they are doing something illegal from Min’s perspective. With that said, one interesting point is that Blockheads and UBIK Capital were both community-formed teams. If I recall correctly, Pocket (a major validator in the space) also received pressure for their citizen node incentives idea. SesameSeed seems to be a legitimate business, so perhaps the Foundation sees it as “okay”.

Is it playing favorites? Maybe. Is it moving goal posts? Maybe.

It certainly would’ve been nice if Min didn’t call out and spook those community teams back then if the same kind of activity is apparently fine for “real businesses”.

Anyway, I’ll let the Foundation explain. Perhaps it’s as simple as a shift in perspective. Things change over time, so maybe this kind of scheme is okay now. Though I’d be interested to see what the response would be if all teams started offering their voters economic incentives.

Personally, I don’t see an issue with as P-Rep rewards have been cut 80-90% – I don’t know the exact numbers. I think this particular use case for SEED is an overall positive. With that said, it would be nice to see the Foundation clear the air publicly because there is clearly still concern in the community about “vote buying”. This is just another example of how GOOD COMMUNICATION can prevent stuff misunderstandings, mistrust, and overall bad PR for all parties involved.

Also, maybe Bong explained in Korean. It would be nice if those responses could be translated to English since the original topic and almost all responses are in English.

As a “community team” we’ll just add that when we joined the ICON Network as a P-Rep back in February of this year, we were ranked #105 and it took us almost an ENTIRE YEAR of working hard (basically grinding it out everyday, focused and dedicated solely on ICON) to become a main P-Rep (currently ranked #18). So, we definitely understand the struggle and the amount of effort (not to mention immense luck) that is/was involved in order to climb up in rankings and win votes…

With “economic incentives” in place and at the disposal of any P-Rep team to dangle in front of voters, and we don’t mean to pick on any one team as this could apply to anyone, just speaking in generalities, it’s really not difficult to imagine that going down this route would provide a “shortcut”, relative to grinding it out the old fashion way…

Moving forward, concerns would be:

This becomes common practice as more and more newly formed P-Reps will feel compelled to offer special rewards/perks in order to get a leg up on the competition and compete far more efficiently (e.g., why struggle and grind for an entire year or more to prove your worth to ICONists if you can win them over in 1-2 months, instead?).
Expectations of voters will shift from contributions/hard work of P-Reps to grow ICON Network more to, “So, what other rewards/perks can you offer me that the other P-Rep teams can’t?”
Hard-working teams who get passed up in rankings and/or lose votes to teams offering (better) economic incentives will feel discouraged, demoralized, and/or may just elect to give up on their current growth strategies, or ICON, entirely, thinking it’s not an effective use of their time competing this way in a fast-changing landscape.

By no means are we suggesting that anyone is doing anything malicious here, and we’re always for the growth and continued expansion of the ICON ecosystem, but these are some thoughts that immediately come to mind if we’re talking about going down the slippery slope of potentially creating an uneven playing field for P-Rep teams…

With that said, we’re very happy to see so many engaged and passionate ICONists who just genuinely want what’s best for the ICON Network and its future.
