  1. Proposal Introduction (What)
    CCBR is a crypto-blockchain research center established within POSTECH (http://ccbr.postech.ac.kr/). CCBR leads Korea’s cryptocurrency and blockchain research and seeks to build a venture ecosystem with faculty, students, and alumni companies. The center actively conducts research and development related to cryptocurrency and blockchain. CCBR also provides courses and seminars and organizes conferences related to cryptocurrency and blockchain (https://icbc2019.ieee-icbc.org/). We are passionate about ICON which can hyperconnect the world. We are currently developing a DApp which will be used by students at POSTECH. We are writing this proposal to become a P-Rep.

  2. Motivation of proposal (Why)
    ICON is a decentralized network that connects various independent communities based on blockchain. In the ICON network, any community that cross national boundaries are organically connected and can have close relationships with each other. CCBR would like to communicate with various communities through this organic connection and achieve the world that ICON desires. In this process, P-Rep becomes a node representing a community and is important enough to lead the ICON network. As such, we intend to support P-Rep with the goal of expanding ICON’s ecosystem by becoming a part of the ICON network.

  3. Execution plan of the proposal (How)
    First of all, we will put a lot of effort into stabilizing the P-Rep node. At the same time, we will contribute to the expansion of the ICON ecosystem by developing a DApp based on ICON.

  • We plan to develop a DApp that replaces paper-based gift certificates that are currently used at POSTECH.
  • Through this contribution of ICON ecosystem, P-Rep rewards are increased so that P-Rep can be stably maintained.
  • CCBR’s research can contribute to the development of ICON through the process of solving blockchain problems.

Blockchain-based gitf certificate DApp
Currently, POSTECH administration creates and sells gift certificates. This is a gift certificate issued directly by the university for the students. These gift certificates are purchased by various departments and distributed to the students as incentives when they participate in department-organized events. The gift certificates can be used at convenient facilities such as stationery stores, convenience stores, and cafes on campus. However, there are several problems in using it.
- This gift certificate is made of paper and operated. Therefore, anti-counterfeiting technology is applied to the production of gift certificates, and since they are not recyclable, this increases the production cost of gift certificates. In addition, there is an extra cost to transport the crafted vouchers, and storing them in a safe is also an extra cost.
- It is difficult to use. When a student uses the gift certificate and when there are remaining changes are not paid in cash. You must write the amount used on the back of the gift certificates and then use only the remaining amount. Therefore, not only the records can be missing, but there can also be cases where the desired item cannot be purchased because the amount is not sufficient.
- It is difficult for human managers to determine the exact distribution of gift certificates. It is difficult to know in real time when and where the gift certificate is used because it is simply issued and exchanged for cash when the gift certificate is used at the place of use is brought to the university administration.

Therefore, we are trying to solve these problems through DApp using ICON.

  • The first cost issue is that paper vouchers will be issued as tokens, so the cost required to issue vouchers will be significantly reduced.
  • The second issue of use is that the token can be conveniently used through transactions on the ICON network.
  • The last problem, the management problem, will be solved by the real time monitoring of token transactions by the manager part of the DApp. Through these data, services using big data will be able to be developed later.
